Intro

You can hide from it, it's everywhere. Everywhere we go, whether that's to the grocery store or to a restaurant we are constantly surrounded by sugar. But it's in disguise, it's not literally in bags around is it! I think that's one of the reasons it's so hard to get away from, it's something that's so normalized and socially accepted. We just don't realise the problem unless we look hard into it, which most of us don't do. So here i'm gonna give you some reasons on why you shouldn't quit the sugar completely, but i think limiting the amount you consume and being more aware of products that contain it, this will improve your longevity and overall health and happiness

What foods contain sugar? and what is sugar?

Firstly, let's dive into this topic quickly before we get into the facts. What foods have sugar in them? Well, I'll say first of all more than you think. I'll give you a list just below

  • Breakfast cereal (Lucky charms, Reeses puffs, Gold charms, Cinnamon toast crunch and so many more)

  • Non natural yogurts - (Yogurts with any kind of flavouring will often have sugar added! Also yogurts that boast that they are fat free will have lots of sugar to replace the lots taste from removing the fats)

  • Sauces - (Ketchup, Sriracha, soy sauce and the list could go on forever. Pretty much any sauce or condiment will contain sugar. Unless its a fat based sauce like mayo)

And what the hell is it? It's talked about so much, people tell me it's bad, the internet tells me it's bad and this article is telling me it's bad. But I have no idea what it is! Well it's your lucky day, i'll tell you exactly what it is. Sugar is a kind of carbohydrate, it comes in a few different forms - Glucose, Fructose, Lactose and Sucrose. I'm sure you've heard of them all before. Some are natural and some are not. Sugar is a generic name, it's thrown around so much. They are soluble carbohydrates that taste sweet, they also don't last as long in the body

1 - Your dental health

When you smile, what's the first thing people see after your eyes? It's your teeth isn't it, now we wouldn't want them to be all yellow tinted and just bad looking now would we. Well, I'm afraid to say this isn't an uncommon occurrence. The dental industry market is growing at an alarming rate, but why is the dentistry industry growing so fast? Ok so when you look into the dental industry statistics you'll obviously see that its growing so fast due to the higher demand! Sugar causes harm to many things, but your teeth you can see everyday. But the more scary thing is that a lot of the damage is the damage that you can't see

2 - Increased risk of type 2 diabetes

Diabetes is really a really scary disease, first of all most cases are chronic. So once you've got it, you'll be dealing with it for life. But why does this happen? How can sugar make you diabetic? Having a diet high in sugar pushes resistance to insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas that regulates blood sugar levels. When you abuse the sugar too much you will become more and more insulin resistant. And that's not fun

3 - Your skin health

Acne is something that nobody wants, it's something that most people experience in their teens or adolescent years. Consuming a diet high in sugar will possibly give you flashbacks of them times. Yes many people can get away with it, but you might not be able to

4 - Your waistline

As you get older it becomes harder and harder to keep yourself at bay when it comes to your weight. You've got more responsibilities, more stress, less time and less motivation, this makes it easy to let your diet slip and eat fast and convenient foods. These foods are first of all highly processed, but on top of that they can be high in sugar too. Highly processed foods are easy to eat, why? Well they've already been processed so your body doesn't have to, simple as that or should i say ‘simple as pie’. And when foods are easy to eat, you can eat more of it. As opposed to high fibre or high protein foods, your body has to work harder to break them down. And mostly this is a good thing

5 - It kills your energy

So when people hear sugar, they may often think of the word ‘energy’ and while this isn't totally incorrect it's not totally correct either. Let me explain it like this, sugar goes through your body faster as opposed to buckwheat goes through your body slow. Your body will get a fast boost of energy from sugar, whereas a bowl of buckwheat will keep you satiated and full of energy for a longer period of time. And am I saying don't eat sugar? No not at all, sugar is good at some times. For example - You've just completed a marathon, your body is depleted of all its glycogen stores, you are fatigued and you need a little pick me up. Having a bit of candy or a can of coke may be beneficial here, but the problem is these foods and sugary drinks aren't often being consumed by runners and sports people. They mostly get eat and drank by obese people who dont do any kind of physical exercise, apart from walking to the fridge

6 - Morning moonface

We've all done it, we overdone it the night before with some naughty foods. Like for example eyou at a whole tub of cookie dough ben and jerry’s for yourself whilst binge watching Netflix shows on the couch. Have you noticed how your face looks the following day, not nice right. bloated , puffy and an unhealthy color. Sometimes some achene can pop up on top of that to
