5 Amazing Amitabh Bachchan & Jaya Bachchan Movies

1. Sholay (1975): is one of those Bollywood movies that is revered by all. Produced by G.P. Sippy and directed by Ramesh Sippy in 1975, this blockbuster still remains an all-time favourite of the contemporary cinema lover. Sholay is an action-packed movie with very beautiful cinematography. The story was set in a village depicting the brave face-off between the protagonists Jai and Veeru played by Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra, and the notorious gang of dacoits led by Gabbar Singh. The movie also is adored for the cute love story of Veeru and Basanti. The role of Basanti was beautifully enacted by Hemamalini. Though created in the ’70s, this movie still remains the ultimate favourite of today’s cinema lovers.

2. Sooryavansham (1999): is a musical drama that starred Amitabh Bachchan, Kader Khan, and Anupam Kher. Amitabh played the role of Thakur Bhanupratap Singh, the sarpanch of Bharatpur village, who had three sons- Karan, Varan, and Heera. The role of Heera who was disliked by the sarpanch was also played by Amitabh Bachchan. Amitabh’s performance in double roles was highly praised by the film critics. The movie is a work of fiction that depicts the life of a neglected and hated son, who eventually rises the rungs of social strata with the support from his lady love turned wife, Radha. Eventually, the film showcases the friendship between Bhanupratap and his grandson, which finally end in a grand union of the whole family after an elaborate Bollywood-style fight with the villain Deshraj.

3. Coolie (1983): directed by Manmohan Desai, Coolie is an action movie with generous amounts of comedy. This film one of the best comedy movies by Amitabh Bachchan. In Coolie, Amitabh plays the role of a railway porter named Iqbal. The storyline is that Iqbal when a young boy was separated from his mother Salma. Eventually, Iqbal grows up to become a charming young man to finally, be reunited with his mother Salma. The movie rose to find a huge fan base owing to the uniquely choreographed fight sequences- during one of which Amitabh was almost fatally injured during a miscalculated jump.

4. Agneepath (1990): is a high-octane action drama directed by Mukul Anand. This movie was so loved that it became a cult movie. The movie is acclaimed as a milestone in Amitabh Bachchan’s career and is among the most successful of all the blockbusters that Bachchan starred in. Agneepath also features Amitabh’s recital of the poem named ‘Agneepath’ written by his father Mr. Harivansh Rai Bachchan. Bachchan’s acting in Agneepath won him the National Film Award for Best Actor at the 38th National Film Awards. The movie depicts how a decent young man rose through the ranks of the underworld, through episodes of betrayal and loyalty to finally avenge the insult to his father by Kancha Cheena played by Danny Denzongpa.

5. Sarkar (2005): is a blockbuster directed by Ram Gopal Verma that showcased the very versatile acting of Amitabh Bachchan yet again. Sarkar is a Political Crime Drama, inspired by The Godfather (1972). The movie is a depiction of the underworld of Mumbai, and its elaborate links with the world of politics. This movie is considered a gem in the career of Amitabh Bachchan. However, some critics felt that the movie had a lot of promise, but it was only Amitabh Bachchan who kept the movie afloat.
